PRODUCERS
The producers we work with are pioneers in the field of sustainable textile production. They include organic cotton and flax farmers, handloom cooperatives, fair trade groups and natural dyers. For our own-brand products, we visit the producers and spend time with them so that we understand how they work, the sustainability of their processes, and how we can partner with them to create high-quality textiles that benefit people and the planet. You can read about some of these visits in our journal. In addition to our own-brand products, we sell a few products by other brands that have similar ethical standards to us and a high level of supply chain transparency.
Organic Cotton Farmers, India
Much of our organic cotton comes from an organisation in India called Chetna Organic. Chetna is a farmer-owned trading company that works with organic farmers in the rainfed regions of central and eastern India.
Natural Indigo Producers, Bangladesh
Our shibori quilts and cushions are produced by a social enterprise in Bangladesh that consists of indigo farmers, dyers and artisans that are experts in the art of shibori (resist dyeing) and kantha (a Bengali stitching technique).
Organic Linen farmers, France
The organic linen in our collections comes from farmers in northern France. Only 1% of linen is currently farmed organically, i.e. with no chemical inputs, so these farmers are real pioneers in their field.
Handloom Weavers, India
We work with several handloom groups around India. One is based in Madhya Pradesh, which lies in India’s ‘cotton belt’, an area that stretches across central India and is the source of much of the country’s cotton. The handloom group was set up to link local organic cotton farmers to handloom weavers, creating a sustainable rural textile industry.
Organic Bedding Manufacturer, Turkey
Our jersey bedding is made by a GOTS-certified factory in Turkey that sources its cotton from an organic farming cooperative in the Aegean region - an area known to produce the highest quality cotton in Turkey. The factory is a member of the Fair Wear Foundation, which works toward fair, safe and ethical working conditions for textile workers.
Ghandian NGO, India
Our handspun organic cotton comes from an NGO in central India that is dedicated to pursuing Gandhi’s vision of sustainable rural economies. It does this through educating farmers in organic techniques, innovating small-scale technology, and providing a solar-powered spinning centre and weaving facilities to create a diversity of local jobs.
Handloom Weavers, India
Our flat-weave towels are woven by a handloom cooperative in central India that is linked to an organic cotton farming group. The aim of the weaving group is to provide employment opportunities to local people so they have an alternative to migrating to the city.
Natural Dyers, India
Many of our naturally dyed textiles are dyed by an organisation in Maharashtra called BioDye. Biodye creates natural dyes from plants and other natural products. It employs an entirely sustainable dyeing process, with solid waste being used for manure and waste water used for irrigation.
Silk Weavers, India
Our silk products are woven by a cooperative in Bihar, India, that is linked to the award-winning Self Employed Womens Association (SEWA). This handloom group specialises in weaving matka (upcycled) silk and wild silk that is sustainably sourced from local forests.
Stitching Unit, UK
Fabric Works is a social enterprise in London that carries out the final cutting and sewing of some of our products. It employs local women who have previously experienced barriers to employment, trains them in various aspects of textile production, and pays them at least the London living wage. All proceeds from its sales go back into the organisation so it can train more women.
Handloom Weavers, India
Our terry towels come from a group of handloom weavers in southern India. The group sources organic cotton from nearby farms, then weaves it by hand into exquisite fabric. The group was set up by a charity that supports communities in the area by providing regular work, accommodation and free schooling for the weavers’ children as well as many orphans who have been adopted by them.
Organic Bedding Manufacturer, India
Our percale bedding is made by a factory in India that is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard and Fair Trade Foundation. In addition to paying its workers fair wages, it offers subsidised meals, medical care, free transportation to and from work, and school fees.10% of its shares are owned by the farming organisation it sources organic cotton from.
